Edward James Allen received a part private and part state formal education ending at Acton Technical Engineering College in 1956 when he commenced an Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship included General Engineering including Fitting, Machine Shop Practice and Production work; Automobile Engineering including Production and Repairing: Blacksmith Unit - Electrical Department and Service Technical and Testing Departments.

Including his apprenticeship, Mr Allen has been engaged as an Engineer for a total of 44 years of which 35 years have been as a Consultant involved in investigation of accidents, trade disputes etc. He has received a large number of high prestige commissions and has had the benefit of instructions from Trading Standards Offices, Public Trustees Office and Local Environmental Control offices etc.

Mr E J Allen is a qualified Investigative Mechanical Engineer experienced in the investigation and reconstruction of personal injury accidents in the Motor, Industrial and Leisure activities.

Disciplines of Expertise
Specialist cars including instructions from a number of manufacturers such as BMW, Mazda, Rolls Royce etc. He was, at one time, employed as an Expert by the late Amherst Villiers who commissioned him to deal with disputes arising out of the development of his Phantom III project.

Motorcycles including instructions from manufacturers such as Suzuki, BMW etc; carrying out special test track evaluations regarding Road Traffic Accidents etc and also allegations of wobble and weave and problems relating to knobbly tyres on motorcycles etc.

Fork lift trucks, caterpillar diggers, excavators, tractors and agricultural equipment, grass cutters and various slow moving or pedestrian driven machines.

Heavy Commercial Vehicles including 4 wheel drive, articulated vehicles, tippers and all manner of specialist bodies including the supervision of tilt table tests to establish stability of specialist vehicles (recently carried out tilt table test at Chobham as a commission by the British Broadcasting Corporation).

Industrial/Construction/Demolition Accidents including coffer dams, storage tanks; climbing, lifting and falling accidents; use of protective and safety equipment.

Tyres: specialist inspection of tyres to ascertain conformity with the legal requirements; causes of failure; causes of wear. Mr Allen has been involved in a number of high profile tyre accident cases.

Road Traffic Accident investigations over a period of 35 years. Originally taught by the late Robert Frith of O’Callaghan Frith and Company who had offices in Mark Lane, City of London. He is a full member of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators and has attended conferences in Plymouth 1995 to York 2001.

E J Allen & Associates maintain much investigation equipment and computer assisted programmes such as Edcrash. Ted Allen has attended a course on the Edcrash system provided by Engineering Dynamics of America at the University of Miami and is a licensed user of the system. E J Allen also support and attend meetings of the International Research Council of the Biomechanics of impact.

Braking Systems: E J Allen has arranged and organised a number of track testing events on vehicle brakes - ABS and non-ABS - to establish braking distances under different conditions wet and dry. He has also arranged special test track events over controlled extreme surfaces to study suspension and steering effects. Ted has also been involved in vehicle/pedestrian/cyclist controlled impact testing.

Crash Testing: E J Allen & Associates have, for a number of years, been licensed users of the test track at Chobham and has attended a number of staged impacts at test tracks organised by the Institute of Road Traffic Accident Investigators etc including the crash testing experiments at Leyland, Lancashire (1992).

Insurance Law and Automobile Assessing: E J Allen has trained a number of other experts, some of whom have gone on to set up their own practice and others who have taken up senior posts with Insurance Companies etc. In the early 1990's he was a senior part time Lecturer at Croydon College on subjects such as Motor Vehicle Law/Insurance and Automobile Assessing.

Slipping and Tripping: E J Allen has been involved in the testing of pedestrians and vehicular road and pathway surfaces etc for 35 years. Mr Allen is a member of the United Kingdom Slip Resistance Group. He has dealt with a large number of pedestrian slipping and tripping cases. E J Allen & Associates have their own specialised surface friction measurement and smoothness measuring equipment which is approved and calibrated by the British Standards Institute and most Experts operating in the field. In 1988, Edward Allen attended conferences and training on ‘Slip Resistance of Tiled Floors’ at CERAM Research. In 1998, Edward Allen attended a Pendulum Slip Resistance workshop at RAPRA Technology.

Lifting and Carrying: E J Allen is also a specialist in cases of lifting and carrying and the recommendations of the Health and Safety Executive in this and allied field. He has studied methods of Mechanical Handling and specialist equipment to aid in reduction of Manual Handling risks. He has carried out reviews of ergonomic considerations and risk assessments and audits.

Health and Safety: E J Allen is well acquainted with the Health and Safety Codes of Practice and the British Standards Recommendations relative to good mechanical engineering practice. He is familiar with the Construction and Demolition Regulations and Recommendations in the custom and practice leading therefrom.

Marine: E J Allen has also dealt with a number of cases relating to the light marine (leisure) industry disputes and accidents. In addition to his formal qualifications, he also holds a Yachtmaster DOT Offshore Certificate with Commercial Endorsement.

E J Allen is checked by the Law Society and has been since the inception of the Law Society Checked Register of Experts. He is also checked by the United Kingdom Register of Expert Witnesses since 1995.
